PNG to JPG
Drag the PNG, tap Shift, drop it on JPG. PlanetOS writes a JPG next to the original, usually a fraction of the size, which is what you want for email and web uploads.
How to convert PNG to JPG
- 1
Start dragging the PNG file, from the desktop or any folder.
- 2
While you're still holding it, tap Shift. A ring of planets opens around the file, one for each format it can become.
- 3
Drop the file on the JPG planet. The JPG copy appears next to the original a moment later.

What changes
JPG compresses photos far better than PNG, so a 6 MB PNG photo often becomes a JPG under 1 MB. Screenshots full of text compress less well and can show faint smudges around letters; keep those as PNG if they need to stay crisp.
JPG has no transparency. Transparent parts of the PNG become a solid background in the JPG.
Even smaller
PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.
Questions
How much smaller will the JPG be?
For photos, typically 70–90% smaller. For screenshots with large flat areas, the gap is smaller.
Can I choose the JPG quality?
Yes, in Settings → Formats.
