Compress an image
To shrink a photo, drag it, tap the Tools key (Command on a Mac, Alt elsewhere) and drop it on Compress. If a form says "max 500 KB", use Compress… and type the size; PlanetOS gets the image under it.
How it works
- 1
Start dragging the image.
- 2
Tap Command (Mac) or Alt (Windows, Linux).
- 3
Drop it on Compress for the quick version, or on Compress… to choose a percentage or an exact size.

Presets for where it's going
- Email (1 MB) gets the picture under 1 MB.
- Fit to 1080 px resizes the longest side to 1080 pixels, which is what most social networks show anyway.
- Web (WebP) converts to WebP for websites.
- Instagram post and Story 9:16 crop and size the image for Instagram.
PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.
Questions
Does it keep the format?
Yes. A compressed JPG is still a JPG, and so on. To change format as well, convert it, for example PNG to JPG.
Can I compress a whole folder?
With Pro, select the images and drop them together.
Can I strip location data too?
Yes, drop the photo on Remove metadata.
