HEIC to JPG
To convert a HEIC photo to JPG with PlanetOS, start dragging it, tap Shift and drop it on the JPG planet. The JPG is saved next to the original, and the photo never leaves your computer.
How to convert HEIC to JPG
- 1
Start dragging the HEIC file, from the desktop or any folder.
- 2
While you're still holding it, tap Shift. A ring of planets opens around the file, one for each format it can become.
- 3
Drop the file on the JPG planet. The JPG copy appears next to the original a moment later.

Why iPhone photos are HEIC
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default (it's the "High Efficiency" setting under Camera → Formats). A HEIC file is roughly half the size of a JPG of the same quality, which is great for your phone's storage and less great when a website, a printer or a Windows laptop refuses to open it.
JPG is the format everything understands. Converting costs you a little disk space and nothing you'll see.
Converting a whole camera roll
With PlanetOS Pro you can select hundreds of HEIC files, drag them all at once and drop them on JPG. Each one is converted next to its original. The free version converts one file at a time, five times a week.
You can set the JPG quality in Settings → Formats. The default is a good balance; push it higher if you're printing.
PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.
Questions
Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?
Technically a little, because JPG compresses differently. At PlanetOS's default quality you won't see a difference on screen.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows?
Yes. PlanetOS for Windows reads HEIC files directly, so you don't need Microsoft's HEIF extensions. See how to open HEIC files on Windows.
Is the original HEIC deleted?
No. PlanetOS writes a new JPG next to it and leaves the original alone.
