Extract text from an image
Drag a screenshot or photo, tap the Tools key (Command on a Mac, Alt elsewhere) and drop it on Extract text. PlanetOS reads the text, copies it to your clipboard and saves it as a text file.
How it works
- 1
Start dragging the image (or several pages, with Pro).
- 2
Tap Command (Mac) or Alt (Windows, Linux).
- 3
Drop it on Extract text, then paste wherever you need it.

Good uses
Copying an error message from a screenshot, the text of a slide someone photographed, a quote from a book page, or details from a receipt.
PDFs that contain real text have their own Extract text planet, which saves the text without reading pixels. For scanned PDFs, convert the pages to images first with PDF to JPG.
QR codes
Right next to it, Read QR code copies the link or text inside a QR code in a picture.
PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.
Questions
Does it need anything else installed?
On a Mac, no: it uses the text recognition built into macOS. On Windows and Linux it uses the free Tesseract OCR engine, which you install once.
Which languages does it read?
On a Mac, the languages macOS recognizes, including English, most European languages, Chinese, Japanese and Korean. On Windows and Linux, whichever Tesseract languages you've installed and picked in Settings.
Is the image sent anywhere?
No, recognition runs on your computer.
