How to make a video smaller for email
Gmail and Outlook stop attachments at about 20–25 MB, and a minute of phone video can be 100 MB or more. Compress the video to a target size before you attach it: in PlanetOS, drag it, tap Command (Mac) or Alt (Windows), and drop it on Compress….
How it works
- 1
Start dragging the video.
- 2
Tap Command on a Mac or Alt on Windows and Linux.
- 3
Drop it on Compress…, type the size (for example 20 MB), and attach the smaller copy.

Sizes worth knowing
- Gmail: 25 MB per email
- Outlook.com: 20 MB
- WhatsApp: PlanetOS has a Messaging (16 MB) planet for it
- Discord: 10 MB on free accounts
Shrinking without picking a size
Drop the video on 720p for a big saving that still looks good on phones, or on Smaller, same quality to keep it looking identical while removing wasted space. Long videos may simply be too big for email at any reasonable quality. A shared link from iCloud Drive, OneDrive or Google Drive is the better choice then.
More options are on the Compress video page.
PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.
Questions
Does compressing reduce quality?
Somewhat, the more you shrink. Aiming just under the limit gives you the best quality that fits.
Is my video uploaded to compress it?
No, PlanetOS compresses it on your computer.
