Compress a video
To make a video smaller with PlanetOS, drag it, tap the Tools key (Command on a Mac, Alt on Windows and Linux) and drop it on Compress…. Choose a target, such as 50% smaller or under 25 MB, and the smaller copy is saved next to the original.
How it works
- 1
Start dragging the video.
- 2
Tap Command (Mac) or Alt (Windows, Linux) to open the Tools planets.
- 3
Drop it on Compress… and pick how small it should be. Or drop it on a ready-made planet: 1080p, 720p, 480p, Messaging (16 MB) or Smaller, same quality.

Which option to pick
- Smaller, same quality re-encodes with settings tuned to look identical. Good for phone videos that are much bigger than they need to be.
- 1080p / 720p / 480p lower the resolution. 720p is plenty for most phone screens and halves the size again.
- Messaging (16 MB) fits WhatsApp's limit. Compress… lets you type any size, like 8 MB for Discord or 25 MB for Gmail.
No upload, no size limit
Online compressors make you upload the whole video first, which is slow for a large file and means it sits on their server. PlanetOS works on the file where it is. A 3 GB screen recording is fine.
PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.
Questions
How much smaller will my video get?
Phone videos often shrink by half with Smaller, same quality, and by 70–80% at 720p. When you choose an exact size, PlanetOS aims for just under it.
Does compressing remove the sound?
No. The audio is kept, re-encoded only if needed.
Can I compress several videos at once?
Yes, with PlanetOS Pro.
