MKV to MP4
Drag the MKV file, tap Shift and drop it on MP4. PlanetOS converts it on your computer, so a 4 GB file is no problem and nothing is uploaded.
How to convert MKV to MP4
- 1
Start dragging the MKV file, from the desktop or any folder.
- 2
While you're still holding it, tap Shift. A ring of planets opens around the file, one for each format it can become.
- 3
Drop the file on the MP4 planet. The MP4 copy appears next to the original a moment later.

MKV and MP4
MKV (Matroska) is a flexible container that's common for downloaded films and screen recordings from OBS. Apple devices, many TVs and most video editors prefer MP4.
PlanetOS uses ffmpeg for formats like MKV. On a Mac it's built into the app; on Windows it's downloaded once, the first time a conversion needs it, and checked against its published checksum.
PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.
