How to convert PDF to Word

  1. 1

Start dragging the PDF file, from the desktop or any folder.

  2. 2

While you're still holding it, tap Shift. A ring of planets opens around the file, one for each format it can become.

  3. 3

Drop the file on the Word planet. The Word copy appears next to the original a moment later.

What carries over

PlanetOS reads the text in the PDF along with its styling (fonts, bold, italics, paragraphs) and writes it into a DOCX you can open in Word, Pages, Google Docs or LibreOffice.

Pictures and complicated layouts such as multi-column brochures don't survive the trip, so expect to tidy those up. For contracts, letters and reports, the result is usually ready to edit.

Scanned PDFs

A scanned PDF is a picture of text, not text, so there is nothing to put in the Word file. Convert the pages to images with PDF to JPG, then use Extract text to read the words.

Why offline matters here

The PDFs people convert to Word tend to be contracts, invoices and CVs. With an online converter, those sit on someone else's server for a while. With PlanetOS they don't leave your computer. More on that.

PlanetOS does all of this on your computer. Your files are never uploaded, and it works without an internet connection.

Questions

Is the Word file editable?

Yes. It's a normal DOCX with real text, not a picture.

Can I convert PDF to Pages or plain text instead?

Yes. The same ring has Pages (on a Mac with Pages installed), plain text, Markdown and EPUB.

Does PDF to Word work on Windows?

Yes, it works the same way on Windows and Linux.
